HOME & HEARTH: LAUNDRY & FABRICS
Today I have some tips that I researched in order to
answer questions I've gotten on these topics.
CLOTHING ODOR AND FADING
If you add about 1/2 of a cup of white vinegar to your rinse cycle
it will help remove odors and keep clothes from fading as quickly.
REMOVING MOLD AND MILDEW
Brush as much of the mildew off with a brush as possible-do this
outside so you don't spread any of the mold spores in the house.
Wash the clothing immediately, rince well and dry in the sun, not
in the dryer. The heat will make the spots harder to remove if they
are still there. If the spots are still there then use a mixture of lemon
juice and salt on the stain, and then spread in the sun again.
On white clothing you can mix 2 tablespoons of bleach with 1 quart
warm water and apply it to the stain or soak the stained area. Keep
the bleach solution on the fabric from 5 to 15 minutes, then rinse.
You can also soak in a vinegar solution(2 tablespoons to a cup of
water) afterwards. Of course ONLY do this to fabrics that have no
warnings about bleach use, and never on silk or wool.
OLD QUILT CARE
I"ve received a question about caring for quilts that have been
handed down from a family member and need cleaning or odor
removal. The first thing I must mention is that if the quilt is a
precious family treasure then please consider getting it cleaned
or care for professionally by someone with experience in quilts.
There are some things you can do, but do them carefully!
The first step as far as odors is to air the quilt outdoors, out of
direct sunlight on a sturdy clothes line or other structure. Do this
cautiously and on a nice day with a mild breeze. This will go a long
ways towards airing it out. If it still has an odor then place a layer
of tissue paper over the entire quilt, then a layer of newspaper.
Fold it carefully and place it somewhere such as a box, chest etc.
where it will be closed up. The newspaper should remove odors and
the tissue paper will protect it from the ink. Do not have a quilt dry
cleaned--the chemicals are too harsh.
