HODGE PODGE DAY

Today we have some great garden and harvest tips!

TOMATO TIPS & FREEZING PESTO
I had a man who raised tomatoes commercially tell me to mix 1/4 cup molasses with 1 gallon of water and water my tomatoes when they refused to set fruit because of the heat. I tried it and it worked really well. I expanded the test and tried it on 3 of my six potted 4 year old hot pepper plants. The ones who got the molasses almost immediately bloomed and set fruit. The three who didn't get molasses continued to languish. This year I have friends trying it on cucumbers, green beans and squash. Hopefully it will help anything that blooms and doesn't like the heat. I also mulched my tomatoes with about 4 inches of compost and I think that keeping the roots cooler helps too.

I grind my basil with half lemon juice and half olive oil to make my pesto. I add garlic and parmesan, but no nuts at this time. Then I freeze it in ice cube trays. When it is frozen, I pop the cubes out and put them into a Ziploc bag. When I want pesto on veggies or pasta or bread, I take out a cube or two and thaw it. I have also put cubes in pasta sauce in place of dried basil. The lemon juice adds an extra kick in place of salt. ~Cheryl

TROWEL TIP
Do not cut off sun damage too soon or you risk loosing the plant. Like winter frost damage, the dead stuff on top may look bad but it is protecting the growth beneath.

Zero Trans Fat? http://www.nubella.com/
When you're at the grocery studying nutrition labels on the back of food packages, remember that just because a label says "0" for trans fat doesn't necessarily mean the product is completely free of the artery-clogging substance. The product could contain a level of trans fat that's just under the 0.5 grams the federal government requires for specific listing on the nutritional label -and that small amount can add up over time. If you see the words "partially hydrogenated oil" anywhere in the list of ingredients, then the product contains some trans fat.
