Faith and Illness
A Book Review By Brenda Hyde

Faith and Illness:
Reflections on God's Sustaining Love

Nancy Groves, M.S.W.
Published by Patient Press

Order Information

Faith & Illness is a small book, one that can be carried with you or tucked away near your bed. But don't be mistaken, it's a powerful book. It's your companion during long nights when you may not be able to sleep. For those who are suffering it's encouraging, but more than that, it helps to bring feelings to the surface that need to be dealt with. Nancy Groves has helped people for over 20 years. She's seen pain and frustration in those who are seriously ill, and her book reaches out to them with comfort, inspiration and helps them deal with what they are feeling about themselves and their illness.

I watched a dear friend die of ovarian cancer many years ago. I was amazed that her faith became even stronger as her illness progressed. She had memorized the Bible as a girl, and loved hymns she had sung her entire life. When I read Faith & Illness I was reminded of her strength. She would have read it over and over until it was page worn. It's that kind of book. It's a gift we can give those we care for that are ill as a token of our love for them.

Excerpt From Faith and Illness

Dear God,
The sadness I am feeling extends
beyond my physical body and touches
my soul. I feel so distant from your
love...so alone with this illness.
I have cried out to you in my prayers,
asking for a sign of your presence.
And you answered in the form of
a beloved friend who physical
embrace carried your love to
my soul.
Amen.
